Little known but famous family ..Leonardo D'Otolo (Also Leonard Dotolo) advanced the plastics industry with a countertop product like "Formica" ... but the product was too hard, and before it could be perfected to use with ordinary saw blades ..FORMICA had taken the market.
Also 19th century records in Texas for Dotolo include that of a cousin whose mother was simply Rose or Rosa .. and the father's surname Dotolo .. from the clientele records of a San Antonio brothel.

Leopold (LEO) Dotolo b.1869 (brother of Theresa) in 1895 accompanies William Randolph Hearst group to Guantanamo Bay area & settles in Paraguay, Cuba; joined War against Spain. His Dotolos remain there until 1959 .. then escape to Key West, Homestead & Miami area. (Marriage, birth records in Cuban Churches?)
A Dotolo aquaintence named Hislop MacIver-became US Consul to Cuba .. Maciver Scottish Family later re joined some of the Scottish ancestried Dotolos in America ... but Hislop MacIver would be met only in Cuba .. .....Paraguay, Cuba was a plantation with still existent sugar mill.

Monterrey California Port records --Spanish report Dotolo passenger? crew? to Mission San Francisco aboard Clipper Arabelle from Baltimore returning from Canton ..cargo: tea-porcelain-etc. (Rare port call for a 'Round the Horn' vessel - cargo assumed passengers,minor wood craft -furnitures? primary destination San Francisco Bay - would presage later stops to avoid crews lost to gold fields.) [Record dated October 27, 1843 ... record indicates preferred spring west-east transit Magellan Straits]
San Francisco Port records -also Spanish [Alta California] indicate a debarking of a Ricardo Dotolo at San Francisco ... and a departure of a second James Dotolo (age 14) as crew? en route to Baltimore. [note-the second James Dotolo may be the father of Theresa & Leopold in San Antonio ... and connects to the O'Keeffe of Fiji Islands & Yap copra trade [look for O'keefe at link]. Ricardo of the Dotolo brothers would be more land bound ...and James would become a merchant seaman; benefitting from the new merchant marine code of Richard Henry Dana - the sailor-lawyer whom James would meet in Baltimore and again in California, also joining the Union Navy in the Civil War.
Ricardo Dotolo is implcated in the American revolt and joins the Bear Republic .. marrying a Spanish Californian (Linda Noe y Garcia -- 2 children - Henry b. 1852 Louisa b.1854) ..widowed and second marriage to a German-Irish Katherine Fogarty - three chldren son 1859 ..1861 ..1862 .. leaves for Union force Civil War to Texas campaign does not return for 10 + years in 1871 .]
In post Civil War San Francisco, Henry Dotolo y Noe, becomes a dry goods salesman in the Missio District owning a store near 16th & Valencia at Guererro across from a theater site which ultimately becomes the Roxie. [owned once by Jerry Brown's grandfather] Both sides of the Ricardo Dotolo family lose a fight with Irish San Franciscaners in the design of a larger Mission Dolores Church - it is built gothic style, instead of Spanish, and crumbles in the 1906 earthquake - rebuilt thereafter in Spanish-Mission revival style.
.. James Dotolo returned to San Francisco after the Civil War and made his life at sea in Hawaii & the Pacific ... and died in 1921 in Pago Pago after that territory joined the United States after WW I 's cession of it to the USA and the UK - celebrating the event at the home of Robert Louis Stevenson whch had been the German governor's mansion after that writer's death in 1894 in Samoa where James Dotolo and Stevenson had become friends in 1890. James Dotolo was buried at sea with a marker somewhere in Pago Pago, and family in the South Seas.
Ricardo Dotolo lives and stops in Texas, including San Antonio after the Civil War en route back to Calfornia. While in East Texas late war cleanup serving with Union Forces .. brings news of the Emancipation Procamation with the US forces to Galveston, ,, but by by reason of hostilities - not until June 19, 1865.
[Ricardo Dotolo is presumed father of Theresa and Leopold - the two born in San Antonio.]

b. 1890 d.1958 Son of Frederic & Theresa Schotmeier migrated to the Federal Armory in Springfield, Mass .. and became a machinist there - leaving the Studebaker Brothers ... actually helped design & finish the "Springfield Rifle" and by-passed retirement to help Mr. Garand finish & perfect the "M-1" rfle. He is believed to have married a daughter of a 'freewoman', as she was self-styled, who migrated from Georgia & North Carolina after the war to Pennsylvania. Their 4 children live in the north-east ..names reserved for privacy. |
Isaac Dotolo
1733-44 ..approximate ..emigrates from London -City to business community & port of Savannah, Georgia .. financially sustains & settles in Monterrey Square .. joining the Jewish Synagogue permitted there by James Oglethorpe - founder of Savannah & Georgia .. is opposed to slavery, like Oglethorpe -- but cannot secure its abolition.
Meets and becomes a life-long correspondent of James Wesley while the latter is a Church of England Minister in Savannah -- commending his social involvement and anti-slavery after he founded the Methodist Church.
Isaac Dotolo -- from correspondence is described as Jewish by a 13th century Spanish mother who married a Dotolo from Genoa, Italy ..settling in England a refuge from the Inquisition.
Add'l note - 1864 .. Rebecca Dotolo grand-daughter of Isaac Dotolo welcomes and offers her family home at Monterrey Square to General Sherman's staff for the occupying Union Army .. and is quietly commended by the General and the designe of Secretary of War Stanton for her bravery and self-risk in sending dispatches regarding the blockade effectiveness and Confederacy Naval & Army strengths & movements during the War via her Baltimore relations.
Isaac Dotolo's sons aided the US Revolutionary War as informal diplomats to Spanish Florida, seeking Spanish naval assistance .. and aided in arms smuggling through Brunswick, Georgia. Isaac Dotolo provided funding to Marion's raiders in the Carolinas & Georgia.
1825 .. Isaac Dotolo father's a child, a woman, by a slave in Savannah and seeks to arrange a purchase of her freedom, manumission ... but she is transported to Charleston and sold despite the payment and manumission papers. She is the 'free-woman' whose daughter married Schotmeier; and bears little of her identity but a 'mazuzzah' she passes to her daughter.
1788 - Murdoch Dololo born .. takes family interests to Spanish Florida .. initiates hard goods trade there - against Spanish law, by bribing garrison commander at St Augustine; becomes familiar overland with much of Florida; and seceretly buys land in Tampa. Openly does business and travels with Gen'l Jackson .. but prefers to settle in Tampa. Great-grandson invests in Maricaibo oil in Venezuela; and in Orinoco factories [first name in records check, expelled in Gomez regime].
Hector Dotolo b 1805? .. adopted full black son of Isaac Dotolo - born a a free black Savannah family joins his older brother Murdoch as his secretary in 1819.
1866-1880 Donald Benjamin Dotolo b.1831 ..Isaac Dotolo's grandson aids in rebuilding of Atlanta ... making a fortune in brick & timber through the end of reconstruction.

Lawrence "Larry" Dotolo
b 1851 d. 1931 ... Son of Ricardo & Katherine Dotolo ... as a businessman and lawyer after 1871 ..worked for the Southern Pacific & Great Northern Railroads. Lawrence Dotolo married a Chinese woman from the Cheng family in San Francisco - actually met her when he returned from Hawaii & Hong Kong after joining his Uncle James Dotolo - and wooed her away from her family on the San Francisco dockside. [She had been expecting to assemble with other near strangers from China around a designated agent for her Cheng Family who was holding a Chinese character sign.] Dotolo would later apply his legal talents to his wife and her family; retained by, among others Edward Harriman, the father of Averill Harriman, litigating the rights of Chinese to acquire and retain US citizenship and to immigrate as did Europeans.
Dotolo and his petitoners retained their civil rights in citizenry .. but lost the immigration battle - and the Chinese were specifically, and constitutionally, barred from immigration to the USA for almost 50 years. A decade after Dotolo's death, the ban was lifted - at the onset of the Sino-Japanese War; and redressed after the war by a preference larger than the European quota which continues to this day until the imbalance is corrected.
Notes: "Larry" Dotolo, as a child worked with some Chinese from the Bay area while his father was away ... and learned the handling of 'black powder' by watching the Chinese railroad workers tunnel in the Sierras .. and learned the Chinese method of labor organization - contract or strike; and safety.

1880 US Census Boston ..record ... May family from Germany marries a Boston son of Richard Dotolo. Dotolos & Mays become involved in The Boston Opera Society ... and are sadly, both unable to save the Boston Opera House from the wrecker's ball ..demolished later in 1958.
